Where is the music industry heading?

Hello all,

Check out this interesting article I found on the web. The reassuring sign is that the demand for music is INCREASING (contrary to popular belief), BUT all industry experts have come to the realization that we need a new model for music distribution.

As a music industry entrepreneur, I am personally committed to embracing the inevitable change that is around the corner. As the article mentions, consumers are TIRED of being trick into buying an album just for 2 or 3 singles that they like. They are tired of having to walk to the store to cop that latest Nas album just so that they can rip it on their computer, convert it to mp3 and put it on their ipods. Wouldn’t it be nice to simply download it (LEGALLY!) from the web and transfer it on your digital music player? Consumers want to be able to get the songs that they like and they want it available 24/7. I should also mention that I don’t believe that the digital era will cause the extinction of the “album”. Consumers will still be able to purchase a full album digitally but at least now they will also have the choice to simply purchase the tracks that they like.

Speaking of mp3s…..this actually brings me to another subject that I will dig more into later on but for now I will tell you that we absolutely NEED to step away from mp3!!!! As an audio engineer I know the clear difference in sonic quality between a .wav music file and a .mp3 music file. Music consumers are getting used to crappy sound quality from mp3 and making it a standard. This needs to stop! I have to admit that I am aware that we need to find a way to compress a wave file small enough to fit thousands of them in a portable digital player while keeping its original quality, so hopefully the technology to do so is around the corner.

I dream of a day when we will be able to have our music on demand, our videos on demand and we will not sacrifice sonic quality for accessibility and convenience. All we need now is to come to the realization that pirating and illegal download will ALWAYS exist so we need to figure out new formulas to sell and license our intellectual property.

I’m working towards this goal…watch me now….

Lyrically yours,

Logiq
